It is not always necessary to recruit an accountant to prepare your tax return. If you are not a home-owner, don’t hold investments and don't have your own business, then you probably don't need professional assistance to prepare your tax return. There is plenty of free information available on the internet as well as software programs that can assist you.
But in the case where an accountant becomes necessary, the most important question is how do I find the right one?
There are a couple things you can do to find and hire the right tax accountant.
1. Get recommendations from relatives, friends and work colleagues.
2. Check to see if the accountant or accounting firm is licensed. Keep in mind that all licensed accountants need to enrol in education updates every year. This is important as you can ensure that they are up to date with the changes in the tax system.
3.Assess the accountants area of expertise against your specific needs. Find out if the accountant specialises in the kind of work that you will require. For example, some accountants focus on small businesses, while others may concentrate on medical practices or bigger companies. Identifying your accountant's clients will help determine if this is the right accountant for you.
4.If you opt for an accounting firm, you should confirm who will be handling your account. Verify the accountant's qualifications and working style and make sure you feel at ease with him or her.
5.The most important qualities in an accountant are their ability to provide accurate facts and give you their honest opinions. Make sure they keep you in the loop and prompt you if any problems occur regarding your finances.
6.If you are a business owner, it is recommended that you select an accountant who is familiar with your business' sector. This will ensure that they will be familiar with the specific legislation in your industry.
